Trail Conditions: There is still a lot of snow on the Champney Falls Trail, about a foot at the trailhead and perhaps two feet at altitude. Also a few minor patches of dirt, running water and ice. The well-packed monorail easily supports a hiker; but if you step off to either side with bare boots you get to posthole down one or two feet. There are a few blowdowns to duck under or climb over. Many stream crossings still have a snow bridge, and none are yet in heavy water flow; so stream crossings are easy. The summit dome is mostly bare rock.

Equipment Needed: Ascending in morning cold we opted for simple foot traction (MicroSpikes or Stabilicers). Descending in afternoon warmth, some of us switched over to snowshoes. On the summit dome's bare rock we bare-booted it. Hiking poles were very helpful in staying balanced on the monorail.
