12/17/10
Much of the trail is covered in ice, very thick at times - covered with a very thin layer of snow in parts. Some parts are difficult treading even with full crampons - where the trail is on steep hillside the ice can be difficult to bypass. Plenty of opportunities to fall - some were taken. Snow never more than 2 inches thick. Loki (a 50 lb terrier/lab mix) found the trail challenging but doable with a little hands on help in a couple places. We skipped a loop to Middle Sister as she was getting stressed out - report was that the trail from Middle Sister to Chocorua was very icy.
Equipment: Crampons strongly recommended.
A beautiful day. A side trip to the partially frozen falls was highly rewarding.
Enjoyed hiking with Rolly, Whiteout, Aquaman, Nature Girl and Loki.
