My friend Sarah and I did an easy 1 night trip into the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness from Putnam Pond. Tuesday morning, we hiked into Clear Pond via the trail around the south shore of Putnam Pond, and set up camp in the lean-to. That afternoon, we climbed Treadway Mountain. The day started out sunny, but the clouds had started to roll in by the time we reached the summit of Treadway. When we reached the summit, we got some really nice views of orographic lifting (mountains causing and influencing cloud formation) occurring in the High Peaks. This was my second time up Treadway, and it is one of my favorite "little" mountains; much of the last half mile is an open ridgewalk to the summit with nice views of the High Peaks, the mountains across Lake Champlain in Vermont, and Pharoah Lake to the south. Treadway definitely gives you a lot of bang for the buck, it's a fairly easy mountain to climb with excellent views from the summit.
On our way back to the lean-to, we took some extra time to check out the link trail between the west shore of Putnam Pond and the Treadway Mountain trail. Some nice views of the pond, but nothing special. Sarah continued back to the lean-to while I took a loop around Clear Pond. Clear pond looks like it gets a lot of use. There are 4 heavily impacted campsites on the pond in addition to the lean-to, 3 (illegal) ones right on the shore, and 1 uphill behind the lean-to. Also found a primitive shelter someone had built on the west shore of the pond.
We woke up the next day to pouring rain, which we hiked through back to Putnam Pond by way of Rock Pond and Heart Pond. Heart Pond has a really nice rocky outcrop overlooking the pond accessible via a short side trail. There is also some impressive trail work on this section of trail.
Trails were in fairly good condition. Some mud here and there, but nothing major. Very, very little blowdown.
