Leaf (ROT, ADKHighpeaks, ADKforum), mountainmeijin(ADKHighpeaks) and I hiked Cliff and Redfield this saturday from Upper Works. Total roundtrip ~22 miles. We stayed dry for Cliff but the rain started on the Redfield herdpath.

Mountainmeijin was feeling the distance and decided to turn back just above the top of the steambed on Redfield and met up with us back at the Uphill Leantoo. A really good effort by Mountainmeijin and a fun guy to hike with.

A few close lightning cracks on the way up to Redfield as Leaf and I scurried up.

Cliff was number 44 for me, 12 for Leaf, and 12 for mountainmeijin. Redfield was number 45 for me, 13 for Leaf.

Lots of rain on the way out. Mountainmeijin will be writing up the formal report on ADKHighpeaks.com. Just wanted to post a bit here and some pics courtesy of Leaf.

All of the herdpaths are in GREAT shape! Excellent work on the new official start of the Cliff herdpath, its maybe two minutes from the start of the herdpath directly across from the Uphill Leantoo. My main impressions from the day were:
1. I cannot imagine what climbers of Cliff went through before all of the blowdown was cleared! The entire path was covered in blowdown. Great work clearing it!!!
2. Has anyone climbed Cliff via the slide on the McMartin map?

Way to go gang! Nice Pics!

Now you know why it took us 4 tries to get Cliff and Redfield last winter, it was ugly! Sometimes we would have to crawl under blowdown, other times we would have to tip toe over it. I'm very glad Black Spruce and crew went in there and cleaned it up. :D

We will start te day from the bottom of Hanging Spears trail (which you and Laurie helped clear this past summer) and cross Flowed Land via Livingston Pond point, a very scenic route on the way to Cliff. The wet area needs not only more work but solutions as well, so next spring trailwork walk will have to be a brainstorming session.

Sign me up! After the red carpet treatment I received this summer on the herdpaths, I'm more than ready to pay it forward!

:D

Sabrina,

I've been there in winter.

Wanna go back this winter??? :D :D :D

added: I also thought about the Hanging Spear Falls approach route for this weekend but wasn't sure about land owner issues in that area -- its OK to use that approach without any special permission???

I remember reading those reports!! Great strong work! I was thinking this weekend it's gonna be tough to get those peaks in winter, both in one day seems like a daunting task!

Let it snow -- but not till after Oct 27 -- I'm finishing on Haystack, come one, come all!!! :)

Christine and Sabrina, We'll probably be up for some trail work next spring.

As for this winter, we have very few weekends booked! :D

The most successful day we had there last Winter was coming in over the lakes from the Loj. We did Redfield and 3 other people with us did Cliff as well. It was a great day, and moving over the lakes helped it fly along! :D

Ahhhh....I had forgotten about that. I can't wait to be able to cross through Avalanche Pass on the lake and see it from that perspective.

Should be a great winter, I'm glad to have met so many new friends this summer to hike with!
:)

Congrats on being a step closer to completing the 46 Sabrina. Is that trip really 22 miles? I'm not nitpicking I just always thought it was in the 18-19 mile range.

Gosh, Rik, you are *such* a nitpick! :D

I just added up all the mileages on the National Geo Map and you were right! It ~19.2; with the assumptions that the Cliff herdpath is 1 mile and the Redfield herdpath is 1.5 miles long. I thought I had read somewhere that it was 22 but perhaps that's if coming from the Loj?

Maybe someone knows for sure?

And thanks for the congrats! Feels good to have hiked so much this summer! :)

Great job you guys .....I sure missed hiking with, work was tough knowing you were out there....I am really happy and can't wait to be there for your finish!!!
btw...the mileage might be 19 or so for you but I think it was 50 for Terra... ;)

JEFFREY!

Sorry, lost my composure there for a moment, its been too long since I've seen the wee lad.

We missed you too! Very much. Lets go back and get them together soon for your Fall list.

When Pete Hickey and Julie Smith told me about that trip in February 06, they said 21 miles. But I think Pete was just trying to scare me off, because he wasn't sure I could do it.

We probably end up doing more than that because we circled around the summit several times, disoriented by a whiteout. Never trust Pete in winter, his glasses gets too foggy.

OH- And congrats Sabrina, you are getting close !

Well, true but lets not forget the on-leash part on the DEC trail cut her overall mileage back!

Timmus - thanks for that info..and your congrats, ONE more! And you've come so far, too! I can't imagine at this point you not being able to "make it" any distance!!

Where has that foggy glass-ed Old Moutain Man been lately, anyhow? I really can't become a "real 46er" without runnning across him barefoot on the trail whirling his axe, can I?

His avatar says it all, well sort of. His knees are in bad shape. He still hikes, but not as much as he used to. He's a little bummed, as you can imagine.

Congrats on Cliff and Redfield!!! I'll have to let my sister-in-law know that the trail has been cleared. I must have missed that post. I look forward to reading your report on Haystack. Hopefully you'll have a clear day so you can enjoy the incredible views that Haystack has to offer.

All ready to go for 46 now U/D congrats again.

I kept having the #20 (miles) (32km for us Kanuks) thrown at me while doing Cliff and Redfield. It felt more like 40 in the rain.

I miss the Axeman's posts also .... heal quick Pete!
