Trails: Three Ponds (from Stinson Lake Road trailhead), Mt Kineo
Conditions: Even with the stretch of dry weather we've enjoyed (until today that is, Thursday), there is a lot of mud on the loop, and not all of it is easily skirtable. In addition to the several boggy spots on the Three Ponds stretch, a new snowmobile trail is being cut with heavy equipment on the part of the Mt Kineo Trail that's near the waterfall below the junction with the Three Ponds Trail, adding big tracks and deep ruts to the mud. NOTE (added 10/16): there is a major blowdown -- well, "cutdown" -- involving two trees on the Mt. Kineo Trail just above the waterfall. They're the result of the snowmobile trail work, and it's possible they've been removed by now. On Sunday, however, they covered the trail and were not easy to bypass.
Equipment: Gaiters and mud-proof boots.
Comment: My sister and I took some out-of-town company on this classic, gentle near-five-mile loop. Except for the mud (which was bothersome only some of the time), the route was a gorgeous walk in perfect weather. The Mt Kineo Trail was a bit difficult to follow in a couple of places due to heavy leaf cover. Enjoyed a lovely picnic on the rocks at the top of the falls. The trailhead parking lot was jammed, yet we saw just a dozen or so hikers, including families, and three fisherman casting for those final trout of the season.
