trails: atv/snowmobile trail, unnamed trail

conditions: we drove in via judd road (unmarked)to the base area for the long gone enchanted mountain ski area. the road was in good shape except for a couple rough hills that would be a bit much for most cars. ok in a high clearance 4wd. we went in this way as we heard enchanted mountain road was in bad shape. based on what we saw in there it seems enchanted mountain road is being used for logging and has been improved so that is the way i would suggest heading in. that road is marked and about 10.6 miles north of where route 201 crosses the kennebec river. judd road is a bit south of there. we parked shortly past the foundations of the old ski area building and picked up an atv/snowmobile road marked as coburn connector which led up to a radio repeater station. footing was dry and a mix of good walking and loose rocky footing. from the repeater we continued past an open gate on the road before turning off onto a somewhat obscure trail leaving to the right at a cairn. this trail climbed quite steeply and directly to the summit. descending we used the atv road all the way down instead of the trail. good info for this hike can be found in the amc maine mountain guide.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: a nice way to start a couple days of hiking in maine. a good and relatively quick walk to the summit which had a nicely rebuilt viewing platform on top providing great views to the surrounding peaks and lakes.
