It's coming....get ready.....going out with the scouts this weekend....supposed to feel like -19F on Sat or sunday night.....hope everyone is prepared ...problem is that we're just hanging around....need to stay moving...I think the adults will call it quits and leave a day early...stay safe everyone...

Coldair..I mean Coldfeet, yeah, dress appropriately this weekend. You probably should inform them of the cold weather coming. Today it is 57degrees here in Northern NJ and no way this is indicative of the supposedly cold front pushing through Friday. Make sure your scouts and their parents know this as you can't be too safe on this!

Bring on the cold!

Warming event fer three days (rain also on friday) then cooling event (50, 60 degrees cooler?) on the weekend. Already a diminished snowpack (0-10") -- looks like lots of crusty snow and ice this weekend! It was cool last Friday when I did Sandwich Dome (-5F to about 5F) and I loved it... it felt great. It'll be cooler and windier but I can't wait to get out in some nice winter conditions this weekend!!!!

The weather will be VERY rough in the Whites Friday, so much, that I am going to Cannon to see it and ski. :) Winds over 70+ in whites friday and saturday, mount washington will have gusts to 140-150! -Mattl

Sounds like more crampon weather...Hey Dave are you going to the Livingston Manor southern Cats? If you have time and can get the gang out for a short hike, try Redhill Firetower. I was up that tower a few years back before it was restored on a windy winter day. They had cables from the top anchored to the ground to help stablize it. Man that sucker was swaying in the breeze that day, I was holding on pretty good. I guess there WAS a good reason they tried to keep people off.

Here is what the Mt. Washington Observatory says

"Temperatures will drop quickly to below zero readings, allowing wind chill values to drop to as low as -70F! IT IS ADVISED THAT NO ONE TRAVEL ABOVE TREELINE FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY!!!

Winds will be 100mph........

Well, what are we waiting for? Sounds like fun. I just shaved the left side of my face. My only problem is whether to take a wide mouth or a narrow mouth water bottle.

Weird weather here. Now it is -6C (21F), in the morning it will be +8C(46), and -10C(14F) in the afternoon. No mention of wind, but with tempreatures bouncing like that, it should make things interesting. Interesting snow conditions for the ski race this weekend.

Tony, the Red Hill fire tower was my first catskill climb summer of 04....my friend JackCannine from liberty is a volunteer on certain weekends there....can't take the scouts, once they park the cars they don't move...but a few boys want to get in their 5 mile hike...i'll ask the leaders about where to go....had to check gear yesterday, glad I did, one boy only had a +20 bag, told his mom to bring some blankets, another had 4-5 cotton t's....I'm in charge of making the "stew"...hope it's good...

I'm happy the cold air is finally moving in for what seems like the first time all year, but it would be nice we could have a more normal winter and actually have a prolonged period of cold temperatures. The past few years have been great because of that, but this year reminds me of the El Nino/La Lina years of the late 90s.

On the other hand, I'm a little upset that its going to be real cold because the -70 or colder wind chill will once again keep me away from the upper elevations of the white mountains. It would be a wild day, but also a dangerous one and I'm not about to do anything stupid. .....SO BRING ON THE COLD! :D

Freezing rain right now in MTL. Temps to rise to 6C the rapidly plummet to -15C with winds to 90 kph. Should be good for business.

This weekend will be my first trip to the 'dacks and my first winter camping trip ever...we sure picked a great time to go! Does anyone know a good website with current weather conditions in the High Peaks area?

I've been using rechargeable batteries all winter. Last night I put Lithiums in everything for tommorow's hike.

In theory, NiMH rechargables should be ok to around -20F (-30C), so they might still be ok. I'd certainly carry Lithium spares.

Shove your batteries down your pants (along with your GU) top keep them warm. If it ever gets colder than -20F down my pants, I have more to worry about than my batteries.

Plymouth NH had a wind gust to 52 miles per hour! Trees are down everywhere, and my friend just called and told me that a tree fell onto a car right next to his and destroyed it. We had a thunderstorm along with it! Wild stuff! -Mattl

Huge wind gusts ripped thru Poughkeepsie this morning. Temps dropped like a stone. Power went out about 10 times!  And to top if off my UPS is dead!
