I had yesterday off... still getting used to that idea. MLK Day is a relatively new company holiday at my place of work.

So naturally a few of us planned, at the last minute, to hike. We were going to go up Mount Washington via the Lion Head. But even had we been able to miraculously transport ourselves to the trailhead, bypassing the snowstorm and the terrible driving conditions, we would not have had a good day for hiking and enjoying the mountain.

The best I could manage was to take a stroll in the Scarborough Marsh, a wildlife refuge that's literally steps from my door, here in Scarborough, Maine. The Eastern Trail (an old railroad bed) runs right through the marsh and is great for running, cycling, xc skiing or snowshoeing.

The snow had stopped and the solid overcast had given way to partly cloudy skies. It was great to get out and do something... after having to scuttle our plans for a grand adventure on Mount Washington, I found that doing even something as modest as this was a lot nicer than doing nothing at all.

A few shots...

Nice pics! I've biked that trail, but never snowshoe'd it. Going to have to check it out.......

Thanks Audrey and Petch for the kind remarks.

Winter's been that way for me this year, between weather, work, holidays, and off-and-on bouts with pneumonia. I'm taking what I can get and trying to be grateful for it!

Here is the complete gallery from yesterday.

Your photos are so peaceful and serene. There is beauty all around us as the Navajo blessing tells us!
