I don't have any links to news articles, but this morning on the radio they were talking about the rescue of 3 hikers from Washington, D.C. in Crawford Notch on Saturday. Radio report states that they were trying to ski.

Anyone have any further details, or a newslink?

edit:
OK, I should have finished reading the news this morning. Found a short news brief:
BETHEL, Maine (AP) -- Three skiers who got lost this weekend in Crawford Notch were found in Maine.

Edward and William Kenney of Washington D.C. and Michael Brady of Flushing New York were taken to a Maine hospital to be checked for hypothermia Sunday.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Officer Eric Hannett said the trio headed into the Notch Saturday morning, with two of them wearing telemark skis and the third wearing downhill skis.

They got lost and spent the night outdoors before following the slope downhill. Hannett said Maine wardens using a helicopter located the trio, who met up with rescuers in Bethel.

Sounds like Evans Notch, not Crawford Notch. It's a long ski to Bethel!

I suppose it's possible - after all Mad Townie moved Madison from NH into Maine when he posted a trip report under Maine instead of NH.

Yeah - when I read it I was trying to figure out how they started out at Crawford and were found in Maine!!!

Jet powered skis!

I went mountain biking in Ringwood, NJ once and wound up in Tuxedo Park, NY... somehow...

The local news showed maps that the rescuers were using and they indicated that the group had started at Pinkham notch to do the Carters, got lost and ended up dropping into the wild river area. Things were pretty windy saturday in the area with a lot more clouds forming over the summits than forecasted so this may be how they lost the ridge. (The trail does tend to meander a bit along the ridge between zeta pass and Middle carter which also may have contributed to getting off the trail).

BTW the resuce plane that located them, was already out searching for some lost hikers in Andover ME.

Indeed, they were lost and found in the Evans Notch area. On the third day of a trip with students up the Wild River Valley and out through Carter Notch (from which I just returned this morning...must get VFTT fix right away!) we noticed a plane flying up and down the valley most of Sunday. We assumed it was a flightseeing operation out of Gorham but wondered why they seemed to take such an interest in us. They circled us several times. It makes sense, as our small group of students was hiking ahead and we three leaders were sitting in camp, off trail, sipping coffee. We must have made good candidates for the three missing skiers. They must have figured out we were not their quarry, as they ignored us after a few relatively close passes. I'm glad to hear the skiers were found in good shape.

BTW, it was a fantastic trip. Will post a trip report soon.
