Today, a group of people, in celebration of Daniel Doan's life and writings, did trail work on the Daniel Doane trail, from Quintown to the summit of Smart's Mtn. This group consisted of friends, relatives, and members of the Doane family.

Two of us from DOC led the group and were the Sawyers for blowdowns on the trail.

At present, this sometimes neglected trail is now free of blowdowns, has several new waterbars, clean drainage, and is 80% brushed out. We ran out of time near the summit of Smart's, and it was too wet out today to blaze, but a couple of us are going back in next week to blaze, and do more brushing.

If you decide to hike this trail, be advised that parts of it are very wet, and seem destined to remain so.

It's a beautiful trail and the big celler holes and wells are some of the best to be seen in Old Quintown.

Thanks

Hillwalker and Group,
Thanks for your trailwork on the Daniel Doane trail. I hiked it 3 years ago with a friend after reading some of Daniels hiking books and history books. It was in rough condition and needed some TLC.
Thanks!

Were there any members of the Doan family :)

Yes

Yes, since they spell it Doane. I mis-spelled it a couple of times until I saw the lite.

By the bye, I need to go in there and repaint the blazes (blue) since it was raining too hard to paint them that day. Anyone want to help? Planning on doing it very soon. Possibly tomorrow (Wednesday 5/23)

Thank you for your help in keeping the Daniel Doane Trail open. :) A few years back I did a nice loop using the Doane Trail, south to Smarts Mtn. and back, then north on the AT, and finally back to the car via Quinntown Road.

The Doane Trail used to be the Appalachian Trail many years ago.

Finis

Thanks Sue. As of 12:30 PM today, the trail is completely brushed and blazed. It's amazing just how fast one works when harassed by a cloud of Black Flies.

I once climbed Smarts up the Doan Trail (which was the Mousley Brook Trail then) and down the Ranger Trail, returning to car by woods road to W which
was also the AT once (with side trip to bag Smith). Then did separate loop over Cube in the afternoon, coming down old N trail which is the only time I ever saw a skull & crossbones on a trail sign.

One of my few hiking days that SF couldn't repeat in a couple hours :)
