On our continuing quest to stand on every site a fire tower is, once stood or was proposed brought us to Deer Mountain (Pittsburg, NH), #59 for us of the 92 towers. This tower is the most northern tower on the list.
There is a trail register at the trailhead dating back only to 2012. The trail is relatively new, it needs to be blazed still, but it is quite easy to follow. The bog bridges appear to brand new. At the beginning the trail follows a brook on the left and an older logging area on the right. Just look to the left, it’s most scenic. LOL.
We passed quite a few cascades on the lower part of the trail which provided water for the pup. As the trail continues up there are areas where the forest is quite open and with the blue skies we had all day, it made for a fantastic day. A few times along the hike we seemed to be on what might have been the old access road for the tower. There didn’t seem to be one place on the trail that we would consider steep, a lot of places on the trail are flat. We came up a flat area near the top that must have once been the warden’s cabin. It’s no longer standing, but there are enough artifacts left behind. Shortly after that old cabin site we were approaching the summit and could see the cab-less fire tower.
The tower was in use until 1976, then they later removed the cab and the wood steps were also removed to stop people from climbing it, it is considered unsafe. There is a pine tree that has grown right up the middle of the tower and is actually higher than tower now. The views are pretty much non-existent. There were a ton of flies up there, they didn’t really bother with us to much though. We looked around to see if something was dead, but didn’t find anything. We checked out the other artifacts in the area, then headed back down the trailhead. This was a great hike. If you are in the area, it’s worth it.
We did post a video of the hike on YouTube for anyone interested in seeing it. Just click the link.
