It was over beer on Friday night that was decided that Drumhaggart, Seth (on VftT, but I don't know his trail name), Zippy and I would hike Dix Mountain from the Round Pond Trailhead on Route 73. We started out about 7:45 am and made good time to the Boquet River shelter. Good footing and most of the mud was easily negociated. It gets a bit steeper from the shelter to the granite ledge, where we found a good water source. The granite ledge is a very impressive slab of granite. The trail ascends the ledge for about 60' of vertical and exits to the right, and back into the trees.
It is from here that things get rather steep with lots of granite ledge all of it with surprisingly good footing, in spite of some of it being wet. The grade is about 38% over the 3/4 of a mile to the top. The Views from the Top made the trip well worth it. The view of Giant Mtn is wonderful as is the view of the Great Range. Camels Hump and the other mountains of Vermont are awe inspiring.
We had intended to continue on to Hough, but thoughts of cold beer, and the dinner at the ADK BBQ began to cloud our thoughts. We spent an entire hour on the summit just taking in the views and thinking of beer. We left the way we came, just a bit thirstier.
