We start from the gate at 6.30 a.m. 30 minutes to go at the summer parking.
Very few snow before the first Lean-to with a lot of places water and rock, it was impossible to use the snowshoes in this part!
From this Lean-to to the limite before alpine area near Dix summit, hard snow with many place We need to snake each side of icy place where the water running down.
In this last part the Viper crampon snowshoes can not broken the icy croust We need to switch to crampons.
From Dix top to Hough, old snowshoes tracks but We used crampons for the first part but when We see We start to make hole We put snowshoes on.
From Hough to South Dix We used snowshoes, because We are not in track and It is impossible to use crampon, without snow support, unfortunately the snowshoes are not also a perfect choice. Many time We slip with a part of the icy crust.
Fortunately a group hiked Macomb-South Dix-East Dix few day before, We used snowshoes except when We go down in the rocky place between South Dix and the lower elevation before to go up Macomb.
It is necessary to switch to crampons.
When We start to go down Macomb to catch the slide, the snow does not give support and We need to use snowshoes, with crampons We break the ice and the ice made bad pressure in the tibia.
The must difficult part is when We start to go down the slide, We need to go down backwards and keep hand in each step in a tree branche!!!
At the buttom of the slide, the last rain overflow the usual brook bed, We need a other time snake around rock, water and deep hard snow!!
Fortunately the people made a great job to remove the blowdown in the last part of this path.
We need 10 hours in the forest plus 30 minutes in the morning and the same in the evening to return in the gate!!!
We never saw such difficult conditions in this area!!!
We need SNOW!!!!
