trails between McComb,Carson.Grace, Hough, and Dix are miserable, that is if you can find them. Snow is deep and blowdown deeper. The Yellow and Red trails from Dix to the Parking lot at Elk Lake were like a superhighway by comparison. Gaitors are a wise choice but snowshoes would be useless with the blowdown and bushwacking involved. Happily bugs were not a factor but that will change I'm sure before the trail conditions do. This was a foolish venture this early in the season. After 13 hours of thrashing through this we almost crawled back to the lot. A compass is a must too. As the warning sign says, Be prepared to spend the night!!!! That being said, the views were awesome, the weather great and the charm of the Adirondacks inspirational.
