this is an easy choice for me: Katahdin

I've gone hiking in Baxter Park, twice, 10 years ago, as a naive college student, when some friends of mine said "Hey, let's hike Mt. Katahdin!" the same way they said "Hey, let's go out for Chinese food!"

First time was in early July and was my intro to black flies: got to boulders on Cathedral Trail, needed two hands for boulders and one hand to swat flies. The flies won and I turned around.

Second time was later that month, made it to Pamola Peak via Helon Taylor trail but was too tired to try Knife Edge.

I'd never done any mountain hiking before that; a year later I had ankle problems & didn't get started hiking in earnest until 2001. Would love to try Baxter Peak again.

My initial response was all of them but both Katahdin and N. Brother are on top of my do-over list. When I climbed Baxter it was in about 6 inches of snow and white out conditions. (it was mid-May and raining below 4000 feet) I probably should have turned around but young and foolish as I was I went to the top only to turn around and walk back through the snow and into the rain. On North Brother, seven years later, it was pouring rain with no views. Will need to go back for Fort anyways but will only do it on a nice day.
