Dorr Mountain in Acadia is an often overlooked hike, as most people like to climb the Precipice trail, the Beehive, and Cadillac Mountain. The Precipice trail is the most spectacular and difficult hike on the island, but my favorite hikes on the island are up Dorr Mountain. I have hiked it a few times in the summer and once in the winter, and there are at least 6 trails that lead to the top of the mountain. All of them are different, and all are great routes with amazing views of Cadillac a half mile away, and Bar Harbor and the ocean which are only a couple miles away.
We took the Ladder trail up the mountain, as we had met some other people on the top of Day mountain the prior day and they had raved about how amazing the trail was. The trail starts about a mile south from Sieur de Mont Springs parking area at the end of the pond, and quickly ascends the 1,000 or so feet up the mountain. Almost every single step on the way up is on the open side of the cliffs and has large rocks placed for every single foot step.
If I recall correctly, the trail only is about a mile long to the top of the mountain, where the views are really great. Except on this day, where fog was covering the tops of the mountain and visibility was about 10 feet. Oh well, the best thing about the hike was the massive amount of blueberry bushes on the top of the way up the mountain. We filled up many water bottles full of fresh blueberries. They made great pancakes the next morning.
The North Ridge trail was an excellent couple miles of trail down the mountain, with views looking directly over Kebo Golf course and into downtown Bar Harbor. Here is the view north, with Kyle and I.
And no trip is complete without the tourist ride along the park loop road to visit Thunder Hole and the climbers on Otter Cliffs.
