Temperature: Nesowadnehunk base ~25F (9:AM); summits ~15F (3:30PM)
Weather: Calm-light breeze (base & summits); light snow @base, frozen fog @summits
Conditions: 2-meter snow pack, substantial ice crust; heavily ice coated spruce & fir boughs; 10cm new snow; completely untracked wilderness.
Trail: skiable to Double Top Stream, then switch to snowshoes is essential. Carrying skis from this point would be impossible because of obstructions (and fruitless because there's no route down given the snow pack depth and tree condition). To the point of the stream there are few trail obstructions, so a ski down through the trees is joyful.
After crossing a snow bridge at the stream, a very steep but short (and safe) incline begins. Within 0.5 miles the iced boughs begin and continue to the summits. The route is often obscured for significant distances by a combination of the snow pack depth and thickness of iced boughs. A steady climb in these conditions continues for approximately 1.5 miles, where the route flattens somewhat prior to the final mile of steep climbing. The summits are largely wind scoured and rhime coated, with some minor sections of glare ice and/or snow accumulation. In addition to needing them for the ascent, any snowshoe with a crampon should be sufficient to negotiate the knife edge ridge connecting the summits.
Although it is a rugged climb under existing conditions, it provides a day you will remember. And that day happened to be a perfect summit day.
