2008 update re: construction delays in the Rochester, NH area

The new shopping center alongside Route 16 in Rochester is finished. However, the highway work continues with even greater intensity. Exit 12 is being completely rebuilt and the road is being widened north of there. This "greater intensity" is directly related to your travel time and inversely related to your driving pleasure. Most of the delay effects are on the southbound side.

A reliable source called me this morning on her way to work to report a record backup southbound on Rte. 16 north of Rochester. A digital sign advised that the travel time southbound from Exit 16 to the tolls south of Exit 12 was 22 minutes. I also noticed yesterday afternoon that there was roadside blasting between Exits 13 and 14.

If you're using Route 11 via Rochester to head toward the Lakes region, you'll be affected by all this fun as well.

2009 update re: construction delays in the Rochester, NH area

It's deja vu all over again.

Major construction is now underway on Spaulding Turnpike/Rte. 16 in Rochester from the toll plaza north to Exit 14 or thereabouts. The Exit 12 bridge construction continues apace, and there's also more construction north of that now.

Northbound side is single lane from the toll plaza until Exit 16 without any chance for passing. The northbound backup yesterday afternoon at 4:20 was about three miles long. Yes, I measured it. Friday afternoons and early evenings should probably find you on an alternate route, unless you yearn for Boston-style traffic.

(And forget about going through Rochester proper to bypass the construction zone. Exit 11 is closed, and there's no way the city streets will be able to handle bypass traffic.)
