trails: ethan pond trail, thoreau falls trail, shoal pond trail, carrigain notch trail, nancy pond trail, bushwack

conditions: some mud and wet on ethan pond trail and down to throeau falls. the same on shoal pond trail with stepover blowdown along the whole of the trail, some of which was removed today. the southern end in particular has a fair amount of blowdown and is badly grown in at times as well. carrigain notch trail and nancy pond trail to norcross pond are both in nice shape and well maintained with good footing. bushwacked southeast from outlet of nancy pond to the summit of duck pond peak crossing an interesting old bootleg trail along the way. woods were mixed, but never too thick. nancy pond trail has some damage in sections from hurricane irene down low that doesn't effect travel too badly. one high undercut bank could be problematic down the line and possibly dangerous if it continues to erode. numerous significant water crossings were all rock hoppable today. bugs were on and off over the course of the day and occasionally quite annoying.

equipment: navigational tools for the bushwack.

comments: great day for a long walk through the pemi punctuated by a nice bushwack to finish off the day. lots of beautiful scenery along the way along with looks at the force of last summers storm. parts of shoal pond trail could use some work, particularly on its southern end, but all other trails were in great shape. kudos to the folks doing maintenance out there. thanks to jeremy for a good day of hiking.
