I thought it was always open - there are houses right across the street from the trailhead.

You'll like the Doubleheads. Great views of the North Conway area, just be sure to fully explore the trails around South Doublehead's summit. There are some nice ledges and viewpoints in every direction. It isn't a long hike, though... I did them both in December and it took me 45 minutes total, mainly because I ran down the ski slope in my snowshoes! So much fun!

Another nice (short) hike to do if you have extra time while you're up there is Iron Mountain in Jackson. And I believe it is on the 52WAV list...

Ditto on everything albee said. The Doubleheads make a great loop from the parking lot where the X-C trail to No. Doublehead ends, and there is a very spiffy climus privy behind the No. D. cabin. The off-trail outlooks are not limited to So. Doublehead - they are along the ridge trail that connects the two peaks and around No. Doublehead too.

I can confirm that the Dundee road is open to the Doublehead trailhead. I hiked it a couple of weeks ago. Approach it from the Jackson Side, it was closed from the New Trail down to Lower Bartlett. The trailhead is in a residential area and the road appears to be a year round type thing.
