I have hike many mountains in the Moosehead Lake area as I live less than an hour from it. I was not familiar with Eagle Rock until the new Maine Mtn Guide came out this year. I was originally going to kayak but since the visibility was so good I decided on a hike instead. I was going to do just Big Moose which has good views but it's fairly quick hike so I thought I'd give Eagle Rock a try only a few miles north. Finding the trail is harder than hike. The directions in the MMG were accurate but I didn't see the trailhead. At the appropriate mileage was a truck along the road so I parked there. I missed the trail and bushwacked up a drainage in the direction of the peak and shortly reached the actual trail which turned out was the marked by a very small sign hand written along the road. The hike was short about 1.5 or so miles each way through mixed woods gaining over 1000 ft. before reaching Eagle Rock which is a large outcropping at the northern peak of the Big Moose Range.
The view is phenomenal. The best in the Moosehead Region, and I've been to all the big view peaks in the area. 360 views taking in all of Moosehead, Kineo, Spencers, Katahdin, 100 Mile Wilderness Peaks, Lily Bay Range, Moxie Bald, Sugarloaf, Bigelows, Saddleback, Kibby, Coburn, Boundary Bald, and many peaks and lakes. There were a few anchors leading over the 100 or so foot wall for climbing as well.
If there was a 52 with a view for Maine this would be definately high on the list. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting Moosehead Lake region.
Just to make a day of it I did Big Moose afterwards which i've done probably a dozen times before as its closest decent hike to my house. Surprisingly for a flawless Sunday during tourist season there was one group I passed on the way up, and one on the way down. I had the summit to myself which isn't too shabby a view either.
Eagle Rock isn't on any lists and it's a fairly short easy hike but I was shocked at it's first rate view.
