eagle slide conditions.

I agree with Pete. If you're a rock climber, and are comfortable on 3rd class rock, with lichen, etc., it's fun and moderate. Bring your rock shoes. If you're not a climber, it might be a good idea to recruit a buddy who is, and bring a rope and a few pieces of gear, in case you get strung out. I've climbed the eagle a couple times and it's been fun, although I did take quite a fall one time. I had hooked up with a friend's larger group, and was trying to support one of them, who had become paralyzed with fear. It was raining and I was wearing hiking boots, not rock shoes (stupid me, I shouldn't have been there). Friction failed, and I took about a 60 foot slide followed by about a 12 foot drop. I stopped, and nothing was seriously damaged, but that was luck. Had a heck of a bruise on my butt. I switched to climbing shoes and went back up and climbed the slide. Don't fool around with this one. I think it's sprouted more lichen over the years since I've been on it.

It's on my to do list for this summer. I probably won't be on it for a few weeks. If I go before you, I'll post how it went. If you go first--please post a trip report. I've heard quite a few differing opinions about this route. The main theme is always bring rock shoes. I just did Green the other day, and the slide on the North side of Giant looked clean and dry.

Do Eagle on a dry day

Heed TCD's advice and don't do this in the rain. Wait a day (or two) after a wet day. I don't think conditions vary much - other than dry/wet days. I've done it a couple of times in the summer on warm, sunny days and wouldn't do it without such weather.

well thanks so much,Dan ,bev,TCD and hillman weather permiting I,m looking to do it the 16,17 or 18th. It sounds like you guys are comfortable climbing, so you probably won't ever get the gear out of the pack (I've never brought gear up the eagle). So if you're going to bring some stuff as an insurance policy, I'd go as light as possible, a few runners, stoppers, maybe an 8.5 X 30m if you've got something like that. If you've got an old twin rope that you don't like for vertical climbing anymore, this could be just the opportunity to cut it in half and make that handy 30m "slide rope."

It's OK in trail runners, but rock shoes will make it more fun. Have fun, I hope the weather clears out for you!
