We climbed East Dix from Route 73, via the several nubs on Spotted Mountain. Heavy fresh snow throughout the route made trailbreaking exhausting: our trip took 12 hours with seven hikers. There is now a good trail for much of the mountain, although high winds may have erased it up high.
Snowshoes were sufficient for this, although some of us wished for larger shoes. We brought crampons but did not use them. The snow was deep enough that poles were of questionable utility.
The river crossing was still frozen solid, so we had no problems there.
