Special Equipment: Compass and map navigation skill, and previous bushwhack experience.
Comments: Although there are only limited views on the main summit of Mt. Hale, there are superb views from this mountain’s east arm (known as East Hale). However, the only way to get there is by bushwhacking to it. (And, this trek should only be attempted by those with previous bushwhacking experience.)
The Hale Brook trail was in good condition, with no significant snow up to the point of leaving the trail. I left the trail at about 3700 feet and headed nearly due east to the viewpoint on East Hale. For the return, I opted for the short (but steep) northerly descent to intersect the Hale Brook Trail lower down at about 2500 feet. For both the easterly whack to East Hale, as well as the northerly descent, it can be reported that there was only patchy snow in the deep woods.
Four photos from today’s trek are HERE.
