trails: forest roads, snowmobile trail, bushwhack, herd path
conditions: parked off hubbard brook road at it's junction with the gated forest road xh22e. i followed the gate road for a few minutes to its junction with road xh22r which i followed to the right looking for a spot to start my planned bushwhack up a northwest running ridgeline. i ended up following the road to its end at a waterflow station where a trail i did not know about, that seemed to have had snowmobile traffic on it in the past, continued up hill a bit east of my intended line, but i followed it anyway up to a clearing with a rain station. here the trail forked and i followed the branch that ran east along the mountain to the north of the summit passing another weather station and then reaching a 3rd where i started to feel like i was winding around too far and started my bushwhack up. woods were mostly open and initially dry to the broad summit plateau with its multiple bumps. some scattered trace patches of snow on the upper part of the mountains north slope. here i came upon more experimental forest stuff including a herd path marked with blue blazes that led over a false summit bump, with weather station on top, and then continued to the highpoint. descending i doubled back on this marked route, followed it over another bump and continued to follow it all the way back down the trail i was on earlier at what would have been a fourth clearing and rain station had i continued on the road. so in theory you can follow a trail and then a marked route all the way to the summit from the forest road if you feel so inclined.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: after a couple of borderline miserable (in a fun way?) trips previously in the hubbard brook area this one turned out to be a real treat. the trail running most of the way up the mountain was a pleasant surprise with nicer walking than some of the official trails i've travelled in this part of the whites. clouds lowered in late morning and it eventually started to rain a bit on the hike back out, but not heavily. great to be out.
