John and I parked at the empty Greeley Ponds Trail lot on the Kanc and hit the trail at 8:15 AM. The Greeley Ponds Trail was muddy in many places, but otherwise fine. The section of the Osceola Trail up the northeast ridge of E. Osceola was steep and rocky as described in the AMC manual, but less daunting than we expected. There has been a lot of good trail work. The path is nearly all wooded and there is almost always solid rock underfoot. Most sections were dry and there were only a couple of minor blowdowns. We reached the summit around 10:15. There are great views from a slide part-way up, from a spur on the top ridge, and from a mostly clear area northeast of the summit. We opted to not go on to Osceola and instead after descending walked up to Upper Greeley Pond where we ate lunch while enjoying the view. We were back at the car in a nearly full lot around 2:00.
We spotted boreal chickadees, a puffy white-throated sparrow that seemed to be trying hard to dry its feathers, ravens, numerous u.i. warblers, and a 2 foot long ribbon snake.
Special equipment: None necessary. Poles very helpful as always.
