Here is a great site http://www.ebird.org/content/ . You can record the birds you see. The information is kept as your personal record as well as populating database used by Audubon and Cornell for there studies. Win-win. Lets say you are hiking and you see a Three Toed Woodpecker and White winged Crossbill. You can list when and where you saw the birds. Your personal list is maintained ( alot like peakbagging). This is a free site.

I quess I don't understand We can talk about wolves, bear, dogs, foliage, flowers...but not birds? They are sometimes my only company on a hike (that I know of that is )

I'm always on the lookout for a boreal chickadees in the peaks.
Bicknell's thrush is a geat find.
And a summit woudn't be complete without the song of the white throated sparrow. I'd bet most hikers would recognize its song even if they don't know the name.
