Here is a great site http://www.ebird.org/content/ . You can record the birds you see. The information is kept as your personal record as well as populating database used by Audubon and Cornell for there studies. Win-win. Lets say you are hiking and you see a Three Toed Woodpecker and White winged Crossbill. You can list when and where you saw the birds. Your personal list is maintained ( alot like peakbagging). This is a free site.
