Elk question

Any idea what this elk is doing? I shot this (the video, not the elk) in Yellowstone at the end of August. Rut approaching. Antlers were already bare, so he wasn't removing velvet. Is he sharpening his tines? Or maybe sparring with the shrubs for practice?

By all means I m no expert but he could be leaving scent from glands on the forehead on that blowdown....see if a lady elk might be interested!!

Yep to both. Elk, like deer, have scent glands on their head. They rub to mark their territory. Nice video by the way.

But still, it look as if he is depositing scent from the pre-orbital glands on that dead spruce (side away from camera).
