Day 1

MEB, Rotted Body Landslide (Giggy) and I planned a 3-day hike (Ethan Pond to Guyot to South/North Twin) just after Bearly Live. Soon after Arm was involved. A few days before the hike Donna was also going. Then I heard rumors of Swamp and Shizzy. They would both show up. We fussed a lot about possible going to the Great Gulf but decided that the original plan was best.

I'll tell this, for the most part, from my perspective although we all somewhat followed different paths during this trip.

I arrived at North Twin Trailhead on time. The rumor was that Giggy was late -- about 4 hours. I made the best of the time by sitting in my car, decomposing on a Friday afternoon. When they showed up (Arm driving Donna's car, Donna, Giggy) I hopped in and we all went over to Ethan Pond Trailhead where MEB and Shizzy were waiting (Swamp was to show up later). Shizzy had lost something -- I think it was his Rubic's Cube or whatever -- and once he found it we started off on the trail to Ethan Pond.

The group separated somewhat... Shizzy, Arm and Donna were behind us... I told MEB and Giggy about how I soaked my blanket with 2L of wine and we could each share sucking on a corner of it once we arrived at wherever we were camping that night and they were excited at the prospect of sucking wine off a dirty camping blanket. Once we arrived at Ethan Pond we decided to check it out. No caretaker present -- we decided to set up for free. Some people invited us to stay in the shelter with them but i informed them that we were strange folk and that they might regret that.

MEB and Giggy set up their tents while I ate a sandwich. When I was done eating I offered to help but they had already finished setting up so it seemed as if it was a waste of my time. This illustrates my more obnoxious side. Soon after Arm, Donna and Shizzy showed up followed by Swamp. They set up on a different platform than us. Actually, Donna stayed with MEB while Giggy got to sleep with me. I promised him some things but he seemed not interested.

We all partied pretty good that night. Swamp had his axe and a bottle of Jim Beam and he was going to wander around the campsite with both of them. I had some wine-soaked blanket . This made me forget the fact that my steripen failure almost ruined the weekend for me. Shizzy had a 4L box of wine plus some other stuff. Everyone had some good stuff and we all had fun... so much fun that eventually Swamp fell down in the mud and we all got shushed by some campers near us. I had the decency to fart as much as possible before getting in the tent with Giggy. Then we all went to sleep.

Day 2

The people on our platform (Rotted Body Landslide, MEB, Donne, Me) woke up around 6am. We hadn't paid yet and decided to get the hell outta there before the maggoty AMC goon came to get the money. We ate and started breaking down the tents. I suggested that if the caretaker showed up we say, "oh, we just got here and we're setting up...... what do you mean $8 per person!? Screw that, we're going to pack up and leave...." but once the caretaker showed up everyone was polite and gave her the money despite the fact that Swamp had an axe and I had a bone saw and a shovel with me.

MEB, Rotted Body Landslide, Swamp and I packed up and went to Throeau Falls while Donna, Arm and Shizzy did something else. At this point, my story dissociates from theirs. We had fun at Thoreau Falls and then we went to beautiful Zealand Notch. Once we got there, Swamp wanted to go up the slide to Whitewall Mountain but MEB, Rotted Body Landslide and I all pussed out. He shamed us severely. We watched him go up a short ways before we ran away ashamed of our cowardice. Giggy had never been to Zealand Notch and he enjoyed it. I pointed out some things that I found interesting but I tend to ramble on like I have a mental disorder so they probably found me hard to understand.

We went to Zealand Hut. There we met "B the Hiker" and his group of 4. They were very nice to talk to and we all admired Zealand Hut's famous spiders. Then We went to Zeacliff and once we got there and enjoyed the views for a minute or two it started to rain and thunder. We ran away and started up the trail to Guyot. We got soaked. At this point, feelings might diverge a little. I love hiking in the rain and getting soaked and wet and miserable. I liked this part perhaps more than the nice views and stuff. My colleagues may have felt different than me though. We met a father and son on the ridge. He seemed to hate us. We felt bad for his kid who was wet and seemed miserable and scared. I don't feel sorry about saying this because Swamp arrived to the same conclusion independently. Did I mention Swmp carries an axe (and a bottle of Jim Beam) with him wherever he goes? We then met Eruggles and her group of 4. Big shout out to them!

The three of us arrived at Guyot. Let me tell you, following MEB and Giggy on the trail is tough. One of them is always going fast and the other one (me) is always working his ass real hard to keep up. But Guyot was an amazing treat and there was much celebrations there. After that we went to Guyot campsite. The caretaker there, I think, was possessed by a bottle of sleeping pills or at least he didn't seem capable of processing what we were saying. In any case we took site #4. We told him we were having friends join us.

After a little while Swamp showed up but not Hot Donna, Shizzy or Arm. Swamp set up camp with us. While I was walking to the privy I ran into Hiker Bob. Awesome! He informed me that Poison Ivy was there as well which was doubly awesome because in all this time I've never met her once! They both came down and chatted with us for a while and I felt very happy. Eventually, Giggy wanted to go to West Bond for sunset and he shamed us for wanting to stay at our campsite. Feeling guilty I put my wet clothes back on and we went to West Bond. Half way there I had to go back because I figured it would be at least semi-intelligent to have a headlamp.

Once at West Bond I noticed that most of the people had jackets, hats, gloves and pants. I had soaking wet short sleeves and shorts. Giggy offered me his jacket but I figured he had germs and refused. Complaining about the cold was much more fun than actually doing something about it. The sunset at West Bond was absolutely incredible and I felt vindicated for going! Also, the cold, whipping winds were actually quite wonderful and dried out my clothes -- the complaining was just for laughter. After the sun set we started walking back with Hiker Bob and Poison Ivy and ran into Donna! We were merry and went back to the campground together. After the steep section going up to the ridge, Giggy and I suddenly turned into gentlemen and offered to take Donna's pack. Now there was 5 of us at the campsite and we were all very happy.

Once at the campground there was continuing merriment. Swamp had many stories about death that provided us with endless amusement. He had been bitten by a brown recluse spider and he showed us the remains of that injury. I guess he had an extra arm growing out of his head as a result but the doctors removed it.

We commented at how well behaved we were: no shouting, farting, noises, loud music etc. This illusion was shattered when the caretaker came down and told us that we were too loud and to go to bed immediately. We felt shameful and went to bed. As usual I didn't have a sleeping bag and all I had was a cheap throw blanket. I froze that evening without a sleeping bag. That was funny. I slept for about 5 minutes.

Day 3

We woke up and packed all our stuff out for the trip out. Guyot Campsite has this climb out to the Bondcliff Trail... well, you know... Still no sign of Arm and Shizzy but we know their safe. In fact, we found their secret campsite eventually and said hello. Then we went to Guyot (loved the view) and then South Twin. Here, Giggy, MEB, Swamp and I hung out for a while before Donna showed up. We acted strange as usual and had an amazing time. I walked around on all fours and made bizarre noises like some demented psycho and this really gave everyone a hoot.

Then we all went to North Twin.

As usual, MEB handed my my ass with her blistering pace. However, it felt very good to be moving so quickly. I really enjoy having my limits pushed like this. At North Twin we admired the amazing view. Swamp mused that he could possible hit Galehead Hut with a pellet from his gun and I proposed that he try to hit it with a glob of... well, next topic. We ran into a woman near the North Twin summit. She mentioned beer and hiking in the same sentence and I decided at that point to mention VFTT to her. This was the first time I mentioned the site to anyone this weekend but she seemed wicked cool to me. We eventually said goodbye (I hope she's reading this and contacts one of us and we help her get on the site!) and went down to the trailhead. This was fun. The stream was running a little high but I enjoyed walking through the crossings and getting wet.

Once we arrived at the trailhead it was me, Giggy, MEB and Swamp. We had a problem: 4 cars at Ethan Pond, 1 car at North Twin. Unfortunately Donna, who was not present, had the keys for at least one of those cars so we decided to stay and wait for her to show. When Donna eventually arrived it turned out that Arm actually had the keys to that car (Doh!) so we decided to go to Ethan Pond Trailhead with Me, Swamp, Giggy and MEB in my car. There were people actually in the back seat of my car!! I'm sure everything had dried before they got there. Once we got to Ethan Pond TH, we said our goodbyes to MEB and Swamp. Giggy would take Shizzy's car back to North Twin TH. Donna's car sat looking lonely. Once at North Twin, I saw that Shizzy had arrived. I also met Annalisa for the first time as she was at the trailhead by now. That was very nice meeting her. Giggy came back with pizza and beer and once again there was merriment. I left. Arm had gotten a ride with Hiker Bob and had picked up Donna's car and brought it back to the trailhead. I waved to him as he drove past me. This is the point at which the story is out of my hands.

I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Don't do that with your avatars! It's freakin' me out. Do you really want me more mental than I already am? :p

I soaked the blankie with 2L of cheap, red wine. Some of the campers at Ethan Pond gave us those raised eyebrows when they saw Giggy, MEB and I each with a corner of the blanket in our mouthes. When we invited them to join us they politely declined.

The wine soaked blanket, however, did not provide me with any additional comfort from the cold as I slept somewhat miserably, especially high up on Guyot. This was a hilarious part of the weekend and my colleagues took great joy with the fact that they were not me at night. I speculated what Mats and company would have said on Denali if we got half way up and I broke the news to them that I only had a throw blanket and not a sleeping bag. Giggy said that Mats would have said, "Um, OK..." Lucky for the people on the Denali Trip that morons like me didn't go.

Sounds like a fun weekend...Wow we never thought of using a blankie for beverages. We had the mini keg & sippy cups on the Tri's. What type of blankie has the best absorption factor???

Pity the next one to finish a list.

We were wondering how wet you guys were getting when we were trying to climb near Willey's and getting drenched.
At least we had the Woodstock to fall back on, to dry our wet people in.

nice report WU - wicked pissa fun time. The rain wasn't that bad - maybe 2 to 3 hours of the whole weekend, I will take that. It was at the best time too - from the hut until just below Guyot when the views are pretty much nil anyway. Once we topped out on guyot, the pemi open up below as storms were passed. pretty cool. then the sun came out and treated us with great weather from there on out. the morning was great weather as well.

really worked out well.

cool meeting eruggles and her croo (what a hot sketch she is!!! :D :D ) on zealand.

My first time strolling thru zealand notch - what a treat.

We also met two very awesome thru-hikers: Lady Cluck somewhere before Ethan Pond and Spider right at Thoreau Falls junction. Lady Cluck was extremely nice and cute and she seemed to really be enjoying herself. MEB recognized her because she reads her trail journal. We didn't mention any of the rubbish about the wine-soaked blanket to her.

Spider was a cool dude from Pennsylvania and he was wearing one of these manly hiking "dresses." It seems cool but I can't see Swamp or Giggy wearing one. He was a lot of fun to talk to and seemed to really be enjoying himself. He had run into Seema and Brian along the way and liked them a lot.

Both of these thru hikers were amazed by NH's mountains so far and the best part about it was that they were both going to hit the Presis for the first time in a good stretch of weather. I hope both of them are out there now enjoyin' themselves!!

Wicked fun weekend! I would post pictures but my new camera broke...no I did not drop it.....it just started doing funny things.

One thing Wu forgot to mention was the giant mouse at Guyout! If I stay there again I'm bringing some traps and maybe some mace.

Saturday morning I went down to Ethan Pond to get some water and saw two big moose on the other side feeding....I guess that's one good thing about being an early bird. I thought the weather would hold out for the better but on Zealcliff a rather loud clap of thunder told us otherwise....

I kind of regret not going to West Bond for the sunset but the thought of putting my wet clothes back on was not very motivating...oh well.

Hiking out on Sunday was beautiful! I think we spent a good hour or so on South Twin just taking in all the views.

Sorry, Freakin' you out some more Wu, but I don't think we could possibly make you more mental :D :D

So glad Shizzy found his Rubic's cube - I hate when I loose mine.

Sounds like an awesome time in the woods!

Pictures

Lucky for me I've never met any one of you 4 wackos and probably never will.

Oh, pictures:

http://good-times.webshots.com/album/565540772dUkOVH

There's way too many for one 3-day weekend of hiking so I might have to cull a few. And I didn't get enough "camping" pictures either... mostly summit shots. For the most part I took pictures of the following:

1. Ethan Pond (Fri eve) 1-4
2. Ethan Pond (Sat morn) 5-6
3. Thoreau Falls 8-14
4. Zealand Notch 15-20
5. Zeacliff 21-30
6. Guyot (Sat) 31-83
7. West Bond (sunset) 84-116
8. Campsite 117-119
9. Guyot (Sun) 120-146
10. South Twin 147-184
11. North Twin 185-208

You can figure out which is which because I don't have the patience to label photos.
