Did Tremont, Chocorua and Jennings Peak this weekend, and the fall colors were excellent all around. The reds in particular seemed especially vibrant. I don't think I've ever seen it this good. I'm wondering if I've just never hit the peak before, or if it's actually better this year than past years.

I think it really varies by location... the maples are the big contributors to color & I think it works best when you have a good mix of red maple / sugar maple / birch. Not sure how cold/warm/wet/dry weather affects things; wind obviously removes leaves.

Franconia Notch hit peak a lot earlier & I don't think it was very colorful this year; last weekend (10/2 and 10/3) the colors up on Rt 2 all the way from Shelburne to Jefferson were stunning (enough to distract me & have my driving suffer  ), and they were a little past peak this weekend. Along the western part of the Kanc a few weeks ago there was good color.

The maples seemed to do well this year, good reds/oranges, but not the birches (maybe I missed them, but they seemed to go right from green to brown with a bit of sickly yellow inbetween).

Down south here near Manchester we are just hitting peak now.
