I am hoping to get picked up in Jaffrey NH after hiking from Sunapee to Monadnock. I'd like to speficy a pickup spot without actually driving to Jaffrey.

Could anyone familiar with Jaffrey make a suggestion for a meeting point? It ought to be easily findable coming from Portsmouth, and should be a place where I can wait for my ride to show up. An indoor spot (out of possible rain) that will allow a hiker to loiter (coffee shop, etc) for a coupel hours would be ideal.

Also, I'll be calling home for a ride. Does anyone know if there is a payphone at the Monadnock State park (at the end of the White Dot trail? If not, is there a pay phone anywhere on the road between monadnock SP and Jaffrey.

Thanks for any help,

Nettie

I'm pretty sure there's a pizza place down one of the side roads downtown, along with the usual assortment of convenience stores. If you don't mind doing even more hiking, Kimball Farms has a restaurant (the former Silver Ranch) a short distance east on Route 124. Follow the signs toward the airport.

A quick search turned up a Web site with a phone number for the state park: 603-532-8862.

Perhaps they can tell you if there's a public phone nearby.

Are you planning to call your ride after you've arrived? That sounds like a long wait, for someone to drive most of the way across the state after you've called. (randmcnally.com says it's 86 miles, two hours). You can't just have this person meet you at the state park at your expected arrival time?

From the base of the Halfway house rd, it's about 5 miles into Jaffrey, from the state park it's about 4 1/2 miles. The Inn at Jaffrey Center is about half those distances and if you're not too scruffy after the hike, might be a place to have a beer or two on the porch. There are a couple of Pizza joints in Jaffrey as well as a McDonalds. The state park map shows a payphone near the start of the trails.

You could always ask to borrow a cell phone from one of the many people that will be on top and call from there. :D

Nettie, if you feel comfortable with it you may be able to bum a ride from the park to Jaffery. The Inn at Jaffery Center (formally the Monadnock Inn) is very upscale, just a heads up. In town there are 2 pizza places, Athen's and Jaffery Pizza Barn, with Athens being right on rt. 202. Just up the road from Athens in the plaza across from McD's is Mrs. Murphys' Donut shop, great donuts plus breakfast dishes. At the lights there is a "new" resturant/pub with tables outside. I have not stopped there since it changed names and ownership and cannot think of the name off the top of my head.

If you have to wait for a long time I would suggest Raymonds idea of Kimball Farm. You can get a good meal and icecream (or just icecream) for bargin prices. I see hikers there quite often.

If my car wasn't broken I would volunteer to pick you up and drive you to town.
