Sometimes the last minute, unplanned trips are the best...
We found a nice motel in Lincoln that was not going to bury us and the four of us headed up on Friday morning.
After lunch and checking in we went for a ride to Chudders in Littleton, NH - which may have the longest candy counter in the world - it was around 120 feet long - Aaron, Zachary (and Mom) were like three kids in a candy shop - fun place. After that, all hopped up on sugar we headed to Franconia Notch and we hiked Artist's Bluff. This year has had some nice revelations for me - some really nice locations that I have "never bothered" with in the past as I was too busy conquering bigger peaks. Recently I also had my first trip to Glen Ellis Falls which was very impressive (it had rained for a few days prior.)
Aaron bounded up the trail to the bluff, scrambling over every boulder in his path (I know he is only five - but Caps Ridge is in his near future.) At the parking lot Zachary (age 2) quickly asserted that I was to put him in the carrier! It is hard to believe, but a 27 pound kid almost makes you long for your 40 pound overnight pack - it is a much harder carry. Gail marveled at how out of shape she is (I am not far behind.)
We quickly made it to the top and enjoyed the views of the Franconia Range, Cannon and Echo Lake. Well worth the effort. We headed back down and it was soon dinner time. We headed out later and saw some very nice fireworks in Lincoln on the 4th.
Saturday morning we headed up to Appalachia - a father hits the day in his life where he just needs to know what his boys are made of - in the old days, you would throw them off into the deep end - well, this is to be the day Aaron and Zachary hike the King Ravine headwall.
OK - Stop! Kidding...I am not that crazy...
We got to Appalachia around 9 AM and I took the family to one of my favorite places - Coldbrook Falls. The lot may have been jam packed with cars and hikers, but we did not see anyone - I am sure the Air Line and Valley Way were like highways, but the Link was empty and no one was at the falls, which were running quite nicely. From Appalachia just about to Memorial Bridge was Zachary's first hiking steps - he had a blast and did a great job!
Under-napped boys and tired legs made me forget about plans for Gordon Falls on the way back.
A great time in NH with the family!
