First winter ascent of Mt. Washington by John H. Spaulding (accompanied by Franklin White and C.C. Brooks), in spite of the belief that “would very surely find the wind so thoroughly filled with cutting frost that being breathed would create a hurried inflammation of the lungs and cause sudden death.”

Interesting that three obviously healthy males were not off fighting the Civil War, a much more dangerous activity.

It's always been said that the rich must fight and the poor must die. Such adventures were generally a luxury of the rich, the poor being constrained by finances and perhaps a desire to relax in a different manner having invested substantial physical effort in mere subsistence. Men and women drawn to such places face comparable risks today as then and therein lies a bond that exceeds those social economic differences.
