Trail well packed to A-Z and that continued towards Tom. Trail from junction to Field increasingly filled in, with deep drifts to Avalon which gave the mighty tough little dog a good workout but shortly thereafter we ran into two guys and then a third coming down as part of a loop up A-Z. By now that section of trail is a nice trench but not hard packed. Numerous snow laden spruce-fir bend into the trail in places above Avalon, but the worst are gone now. No problem stream crossings or wet areas. There was at least one bare booter up to Avalon and back who didn't do any permanent damage, but most were using snowshoes. Crampons of some sort on the snowshoes recommended for the descent from Field and Avalon on the steeps. The trail to Willey was not broken out, so I assume it is likely filled in and drifted in many places. The trail to Tom was broken out by the loopers.

Beautiful sunny day, with the woods sheltering us sufficiently from the cold gusty wind except at the very top of Field, but a hood or balaclava was a good idea at and above Avalon. Great day to take off from work before the seemingly inevitable weekend snowstorm. Too bad the camera battery died after 1 pict.
