trails: avalon trail, willey range trail, a-z trail
conditions: a dusting to light coating of snow low on avalon trail. some ice on the wet ledges. more substantial ice and a full coating of snow higher up. just a coating of snow on the willey range trail towards willey. this is where the blowdown started. we made it about halfway to willey and removed most of it though some easy step overs are still there. this includes reopening the corridor in the two areas where the trail was completely obstructed. at the prominent u shaped curve a ways down from field a logical herd path was going straight and quickly reconnecting with the trail so we ignored the large blowdowns in that area as it makes more sense for the trail to just continue straight (many people have lost the path in the winter at this spot due to the curve). we had hoped to make it all the way to willey, but there was a days work just getting halfway. according to other hikers we met the trail beyond to willey is not too bad with regards to blowdown. the trail from field to a-z had some ice in the ledgy areas. a-z was generally free of ice with just a coating of snow. water crossings were easily hopped with some care due to ice.
equipment: microspikes useful particularly on upper avalon trail.
comments: plan for today was to clear as much blowdown as we could off of the willey range trail between field and willey. a couple sections were quite impressive to see. many cuts were made today. thanks to mark and tim for a great day and some good work done.
