trails: bennett st. loop road, bushwhack

conditions: bennett street in sandwich was sloppy mid morning, but had melted off a lot by afternoon. there is a plowed area where the road to the summer trailhead forks left. i continued to the maintained end of the road where there is a large turnaround with plenty of parking. i saw no prohibitions. i walked a short distance on the unmaintained continuation of the road which had an old snowshoe track under the recent snow (and more fresh tracks when i came back down) to get around a yard and house then headed in a direct line north at the peak. down low i was going in 1 to 1 1/2 feet in heavy wet snow. woods were beautiful and wide open. though the map showed steep contours i opted to continue on a direct line until hitting real steep woods with lots of rock and some small cliffs where i began slabbing more to the west to pick up a mellower ridgeline. once on the ridge the woods were often nice open birch with some conifers and blowdown patches. sinking 1 to 2 feet was pretty standard up high with some deeper wallows. there are two summit bumps separated by a sag. i visited both and couldn't say for sure which one was higher. both had signs of being the "recognized" highpoint at various times. descending i followed my tracks back partway then headed more to the west into a nice open drainage which allowed me to avoid the steepest part of the ascent route before turning back east to pick up my track the rest of the way out.

equipment: snowshoes.

comments: a nice day to visit this interesting mountain. spring like warm in the open southern woods, but with a nice breeze to keep things cool. great looks back to young and israel mountain on the ascent. up on the ridge there were awesome views to sandwich dome and the other flat mountain from open woods and blowdown patches. some nice looks to whiteface and tripyramid as well. other than a couple nastier steep sections i got myself into on the way up this was a real pleasant snowshoe. great to be out.
