trails: sabbaday brook trail, bushwack

conditions: sabbaday brook trail generally in good shape with some irene effect in places particularly before the first water crossing where portions of trail have been washed out and farther up the valley where there is damage around one of the upper water crossings. it could be easy to walk by the first crossing and continue up the brook bed if not paying attention. followed the trail for about 4 miles to roughly 2900ft then headed up the fool killer through steep, but generally friendly woods to the ridge line slightly north of the high point. explored the summit ridge to the north which had real nice open woods with numerous game paths then headed back south to the recognized summit. descended by roughly the same route. water crossings were all rock hops today, but would be difficult with high water. intermittent flies the worst of which were on the summit while stopped.

equipment: navigational tools for bushwack.

comments: real nice hike. slept in then headed to the kanc. with a couple possibilities and given the low water this hike seemed like a good bet. had not been on sabbaday brook trail since my first tripyramid hike years ago when i completely underestimated the crossings in late november and descended that way. lots of crotch deep wading that day. it really is a beautiful trail. the woods on fool killer were a treat as well. great to be out.
