trails: access road, spur trail
conditions: from 202 in epsom i followed black hall road turning left onto new rye road and left again onto swamp road. i drove swamp road for roughly 1.4 miles then turned left onto mountain view road for about .15 bearing right at a red house. in about .1 there is a sign for old mountain road where i continued bearing left and in under .1 miles the access road leaves to the right. there is a sign saying "authorized vehicles only". there is room to fit a car or two in the vicinity, but don't block the road as it is maintained to allow year round access. a short distance up the road is a gate and sign allowing for hiker access. the access road was being cleared by a gentleman in a bulldozer so was a mix of dirt, patchy ice and snow all the way to the top. near the top a clear short trail leaves to the left at a turn and leads to a nice north facing ledg. 1 foot plus of snow off the road.
equipment: i used microspikes, but boots would have been ok today. if hiking on unmaintained roads or trails in the area snowshoes could be a good idea.
comment: due to other obligations i only had a small window to get in a hike this afternoon so this peak worked out great. there are fantastic views from the summit area around the transmission tower particularly to the north and west. it was a beautiful afternoon though impressively cold and windy on the summit. i clocked this hike at around 2.5 miles round trip. great to be out.
