Cymbidium and I wanted somethng short and sweet today as household chores called us! We chose Iron Mt. near Jackson, on our "52" list. As they say "getting there is half the fun" and the road description in the AMC book is very accurate, a gravel road rough, narrow with many washed out ruts.
The trail starts off gently through a field with gorgeous views and then quickly moves into woods. Over one muddy patch and then up a rough trail that appears to be a river bed. Just before we reached the peak there were two fine outlooks but the summit itself has just the remains of a fire tower with planks of wood leaning on a concrete base. We touched the marker to prove we were there and then started down to find the old mines.
The descent was quite steep, through woods most of the way. We watched the cairns which were well placed and kept us on track. At the junction for the mines we started down over ledges and through woods but the trail seemed to peter out and we left without finding our fortunes. However, back on the main trail we continued upto the high point where we climbed upto open ledges with views to die for! Totally clear views of Attitash, Cranmore and all the way over to Mt. Washington and the pressies. Quite took our breath away. Didn't stay as long as we might have due to hundreds of pesky black flies which swarmed all over us as we ate our snacks.
Trip down was uneventful. We met a family with two chidlren and a dog going up to the summit. We encouraged then to go to the far ledges for the view. Hope they made it.
Well worth the rough road up to the trail head. Worth cleaning off Finn's filthy paws when he chose to go through the mud instead of using the bog bridge! A great way to spend a morning on a magnificent day.
