Arrived at Lincoln Woods Visitor Center on 11/1 with 9 Scouts and 3 Adults to hike to the Franconia Brook East campsite and stay overnight. Originally planned to use the Lincoln Woods Trail and cross the East Branch of the Pemigewasset, but Ranger indicated that the alleged rock-hop river crossing had been intentionally "discouraged" via rock re-location. This nixed the plan for a side trip to Franconia Falls.

Instead, took the East Side Trail. Conditions excellent. A few wet spots, but easily avoided. Gorgeous day on Saturday.

On arrival at the tentsite just before the entrance to the Wilderness, pleasantly surprised at the presence top-quality latrines not mentioned on the Forest Service website or in the guidebooks. Cat-hole practice delayed until the next trip.

Confirmed that the "river crossing" discussed in the AMC Guide is better characterized as a "river wading". WIth air temps at just slightly above freezing, we were glad not to have to take a swim, though it prevented a side trip to Franconia Falls.

Return on Sunday 11/2 was just as nice, though many of the wet spots from the day before were now iced-over puddles, since temps were 20 degrees or lower overnight. Saw many day-hikers Sunday, as they headed in while we headed out.

Lots of views of the tops of the surrounding mountains, to entice this crowd to go up next time, rather than staying in the valley.
