A few inches of new snow with some drifts over a well packed base up to treeline; packed and windblown snow above treeline. I went up Old Bridle Path, and down Falling Waters so that the wind was less in my face.
I recommend snowshoes below treeline and microspikes above, but one person started out in microspikes and did fine, with postholing only when he stepped off the trail surface. It was hard to follow the trail to Lafayette summit early in the day, with thick freezing fog and blowing snow. I almost headed back down from the summit because it was so hard to find the ridge trail, but another intrepid hiker arrived, and we headed south together. Once we got started, it was easy to find our way. I'd estimate the temps around 20 deg F, and the winds at 40 to 50 mph. Happy Spring! The fog was thinning a bit as we reached Falling Waters Trail. We saw more people on the way down.
Great day - no bugs, no crowds.
