December 9, 2007.
The Jackman Ridge Trail - the longest of this new network of (not new) trails - consists of dirt roads packed down by snowmobiles and pick-up trucks used by deer-hunters. (So orange is still mandatory.) Fortunately, there are plenty of real trails in and around there, most of them not shown on the new map. They were covered with 8-10 inches of champagne powder. Sweet conditions!
For equipment, I wore my MSR Denalis, because I could (as someone else put it). They worked great, and I saw no other snowshoe tracks. I did see one set of X-C tracks, on the trail west from Danforth Bay Resort over Mary's Mountain, then along the west shores of Trout Pond.
The new trail system isn't worth going out of your way, especially since all that is really "new" are the little hiker symbols they use for blazes. That area of Freedom and E. Madison north and west of Danforth Bay Resort (f/k/a Shawtown campground) has always been a mellow destination for snowshoeing, XC or hiking, if you are around there anyway.
