Started yesterday 8-19 11am at the Garfield trailhead with the mission to get to Galehead Hut for 6pm dinner. After previous night t-stms and rain, the first two of three water crossings took some patience, thought and proper execution, especially the first. The trail was soggy to the summit with running water throughout. Fortunately the clouds broke five minutes after summiting Garfield for the tremendous views. Really brisk winds 40 mph and temps lo 50s. Garfield Ridge Trail to the Hut is a rugged trail with a steep rock section below the Garfield campsite and 4 - 200' speed bumps to slow progress. It actually was fun. Made it to the Hut by 5:15pm.
Morning 8-20 start at 8:00 for our run out and back from Galehead. No views but cloudy anyway but we got to check that one off the list. The trail was wet like everything else. Waited until 9:15 to go for S Twin because the clouds would not break. Summited S Twin 50 mins later, steep trail that knows its purpose. Still very few breaks in the clouds and the winds were howling. N Twin Spur was easy but wet and at the summit of N Twin, voila, the clouds ceiling rose to over 5,000 ft. and the views were magnificent. However, 15 mins later, in came the next batch of clouds. The N Twin Trail is "close" (as in needing a good sidecut) at the top and at places coming down. Soggy trail but nice descent. Water levels were lower than yesterday but we also used the east bank alternate route to avoid two crossings. Back to the N Twin trailhead at 2pm.
That makes eight peaks for the week. Tomorrow and Friday, thru hike from Zealand to Lincoln Woods with a camp-out at Guyot and Saturday, who knows - you know, depends on the weather! We hear the weather is supposed to be good, but it was also the previous two days!?
