We parked at the southern outlet of the Gale River Road which was plowed for parking. The 1.3 mile road walk had the worst footing of the day with a hard, irregular surface beneath some powder for its length. River crossings where the bridges are washed out require care as they are not solidly snow bridged. Garfield Trail and GRT were well-packed with a loose layer of a couple inches or more of snow on top. There were several major blowdowns and we spent some serious time taking care of all but a couple of them with our dueling Fanno saws. Stream crossings on trail were solid.
We carried snowshoes but wore Microspike ST's throughout. Snowshoes would be fine, as well. We passed another bare-booter and a couple of guys on snowshoes on the descent so the trail should be in good shape.
The forecast was for overcast skies with snow showers but we had a bluebird day. Trees in upper woods are fully snow-covered and gorgeous under the bright sun and deep blue skies. Summit views were crystal clear in all directions. A great day in the hills with friends.
