Trails: Garfield, Garfield Ridge
Conditions: Wet and muddy down low, broken monorail beginning at 4,000 feet, steady monorail at 4,200 feet. Some tricky ice remains on the short, steep section above the trail junction to the summit. Yesterday in the wind, some rime ice grew on the rocks at summit.
A mile from trailhead, avoid the non-rock-hoppable (at present) brook crossing by making the easy bushwhack up east side of brook to snowmobile bridge.
A handful of blowdowns, all easily negotiated.
Special equipment: The route is barebootable, but traction is advised for the short descent from summit to junction of Garfield-Garfield Ridge trails. Knee-high gaiters very useful.
Comments: Even on a gray, wet day, with wind and snow at the cold summit, this is still a beautiful hike. Lots of both kinds of trillium, Painted and Wake Robin, blooming along the trail for the first mile or so.
