Trail Conditions: Road walk was icy towards the center, but barebootable if one walked along the edge. Wet leaves lined either side. The trail conditions varied from dry, to muddy and wet, to icy and free of snow up to somewhere above 3000'. From there up there was snow, but not terribly much of it and what there was was packed down. A good cover had fallen above the layer of ice on the Ridge Trail. Conditions were springlike: temperatures were above freezing until close to the summit. On the way up we crossed each stream with no trouble. The water was flowing, but not high or icy. There were lingering broken snow bridges. Coming down we opted to avoid two by taking the snowmobile bridge and bushwhacking.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes were not needed or carried by anyone in our group. The majority wore Microspikes or the like, but a couple barebooed to the Ridge Trail. From there Microspikes were needed. All wore Microspikes back down for a ways. Poles were helpful for the water crossings.
Comments: One untrained gray jay and a flock of ~25 pine siskins at the junction. A boreal chickadee further down.
Happy New Year.
