Garfield Trail, to Garfield Ridge MT GARFIELD 3/4/12
TRAIL CONDITIONS:Our group used microspikes or barebooted up Gale River Road to the summer trailhead. It was snowcovered and icy. Walking in snowmobile tracks could be easily done without foot traction.
To start up Garfield, we all had microspikes. The river crossing were all snowbridged and no trouble to cross. Eventually, not too far up we switched to snowshoes and kept those on the rest of the hike, round trip. The trail was hard packed crunchy snow leading was to softer snow up higher. One pair of hikers ahead of us barebooted and occasionally postholed higher up.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: snowshoes required, microspikes optional
Comments: Optional - Great hike. No wind and no extra layer needed on the summit. Another spring like hike this winter. Brown creepers, pine siskins, nuthatches and chickadees all singing. Blue jay called and one grey jay seen on the summit.
