Marley and I decided (like he has a choice) to do something different on Tuesday, we ascended Garfield without the use of any conveyance. We opened the front door to our house walked across the front lawn and headed out toward US 302. Off of 302 (just before The Friendship House) is Swazey Road, this is a dirt road that eventually turns into a class 6 road (not maintained). Following this road brought us to the snowmobile trails adjacent to Trudeau Road, which crosses US 3 at 5 corners. From here we (I) decided to go down route 3 to the other entrance of the Gale river road. The trip from my house to 5 corners is 5.2 miles but our short cut took some mileage off of that.
We had a great day in the woods. I took a short nap on the summit (as this is my tradition) and we stopped for lunch at the barren Garfield shelter (saw no one all day). We continued to go down the Garfield Ridge trail to the Gale River trail. The crossing of the Gale River where the bridge washed out was a little tricky. The road walk back was a bit monotonous but we survived it.
I am thinking that maybe I will come up with my own list of peaks I can do without the assistance of any conveyance.
