Can anyone recommend a good book (or books) detailing the geology of the White Mountain region? Particularly features of interest that can be found along various trails?

I'm looking for something sort of like the Roadside Geology series from Mountain Press, but with a focus on places in the backcountry as opposed to along roads.

Thanks,

Mike,

Stop into The Mountain Wanderer in Lincoln, I'm sure Steve Smith has some suitable books for you. I know there is one that speaks of glacial markings on schist, but the name escapes me.

Also... "The 4,000~ Footers of the White Mountains: A Guide and History" by Smith and Dickerman is available at EMS Stores if you don;t feel like traveling far. In the book, the geology of each of the 48 Highest NH peaks is discussed.

Just for thought

I seem to recall there being a series like "The Appalachian Trail Underfoot" that talks about the geology to be seen along the AT. I can't remember if it was one book for the whole 2100+ miles or if there were regional volumes.

Found it: it's called "Underfoot: A Geologic Guide to the Appalachian Trail". It's a one volume thing that covers the whole trail. Might be worth a look.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out! :)

The White Mountain Guide from the AMC has some mentions about Geology. It's not much, but it might help.

The internet is probably a good place to find things as well.

Oddly enough I never thought of the internet. A quick check dug up this:
http://nhgs.org/GSNH/NHgeol.html, which has some very nice stuff!

Thanks again,
