This brief report is, first, to thank the ATIS trail crew for their good work on the Ranney trail and, second, to put the occasional hiker who might be going that way on notice that the section between Hopkins and the Green-Giant col, described in the ADK High Peaks guide as entering "a swampy area with lush moss", has, with this season's record rainfall, become a seemingly bottomless and endless quagmire. If you are tall you might be able to soldier straight on through, but you might want to strip and carry your clothes above your head. BTW, on our way down we met a fisherman portaging a canoe up to the Washbowl. Now that fellow was prepared for high water!
